Capcom Cup 2021 & SF World Championship cancelled – Looking at alternatives

0

The 2021 Capcom Cup and Street Fighter League: World Championship were both canceled for the year this week. Fighting games took a minor hit in 2021 as many tournaments were canceled in favor of smaller online events. Things were looking a little brighter for 2022 as many events are expected to take place. This resulted in the “2021” events for these games looking promising for the early months of 2022. However, this new cancellation raises some questions about how the fighting game events will play out this year.

The cancellation of the 20221 Capcom Cup along with the Street Fighter World Championship may not be the last to cause delays this year. However, there could be a replacement for some of these events.

Capcom Cup and Street Fighter World Championship canceled

In 2021 most fighting game tournaments had a small adjustment. Even the best fighting games play differently online. Players rely on low lag and fast reaction times to pull off combos, which can make online battle games have a different balance. This makes personal events the gold standard for fighting games. While Capcom and other promoters played mostly online in 2021, it wasn’t ideal. That makes the cancellations again quite a disappointment.

The Capcom Cup was supposed to take place in February. However, a recent increase in restrictions from a new wave of Covid-19 has created more difficulties in running the tournament. Against this background, the Capcom Cup 2021 has been cancelled. This is the second year in a row that the event has been cancelled.

Instead of the Capcom Cup, we can probably expect another event. The Capcom Pro Tour replaced it last time, so this format will likely come back. This is a regional event that keeps players in tighter lobbies. This keeps the impact of playing online to a minimum. Information on what will replace the event will be released as it approaches.

Street Fighting League World Championship 2021

The Street Fighter League World Championship 2021 was actually supposed to be held as part of the Capcom Cup 2022. This was supposed to end the Street Fighter season, but that too was cancelled. This event may not be replaced like the full Capcom Cup. It’s a shame that players will be left without an event for another year, and it leaves Street Fighter players in a strange place.

Capcom fighting games in 2022

Capcom’s statement on the cancellation of the 2022 Capcom Cup drew some attention to the needs of players and fans and their disappointment. One of the main issues for fighting gamers during the pandemic has been the distinct lack of events. Essentially, while smaller events have taken place, some organizers like Capcom have canceled things every year. For gamers who rely on competition, this is going to be quite a hit.

The substitute tournaments are a nice addition. However, the regional events are not really a substitute. Hopefully something on a larger scale can materialize later in the year when restrictions allow. However, it looks like this is all Capcom is offering for the year.

We can only hope that third parties like it We play! and Beyond the peak Cover for the company and organize their events to keep the scene stable. For now. The fighting games calendar in these titles looks rather tight.
