How to turn off the iPhone 13 Pro macro mode completely

One of the biggest additions to the iPhone 13 Pro’s camera mode is the new macro mode – but how do you turn it off?

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max feature a variety of improvements in many areas, such as the ProMotion display and the A15 Bionic chipset.

The cameras take center stage, however, thanks to an all-new array of sensors on the rear.

A new camera trick is the dedicated macro mode. This uses the ultrawide camera to get you Yes, really Get close to a subject and capture tiny little details that previously would have been nothing but fuzz.

It’s great – we said so in our iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max reviews – but there was a catch. Macro mode activates automatically when you get close to something and there was no way to go back to the main sensor.

The problem with this was that switching from that huge main sensor meant you lost the natural background blur it allowed, which often means you miss out on the best shot.

How to disable macro mode on iPhone 13 Pro

Until the release of iOS 15.1, you couldn’t turn off macro mode. Thankfully, now you can, and here’s how:

  1. Make sure your iPhone 13 Pro or iPhone 13 Pro Max is updated to iOS 15.1
  2. Open Settings, then scroll down to Camera
  3. Scroll down again to Auto Macro mode

Can you still use macro mode?

Somehow, but not in the same way. There’s no switch in the camera app to bring up the same macro mode once that option has been disabled, but you can switch to the ultrawide camera and get close to get a similar effect.

Hopefully in a future update Apple will add the ability to selectively jump into macro mode with a visible option.
