How to watch Disney+ together with friends

0

If you’re looking to start a watch party on Disney Plus, the streaming service offers a GroupWatch feature available in select markets around the world.

This allows friends and family to watch streams at the same time and control playback by pausing, rewinding, and fast-forwarding the stream for the entire group.

If you want to do it yourself, we have a step-by-step guide below. If the service is not yet available in your market, we also have instructions for using GroupWatch on Disney+ from abroad.

Disney has also revealed that users with an iPhone or iPad can stream Disney+ with friends via SharePlay. We have a guide on how to do this below.

You can check out our other guide on how to watch Disney Plus in 4K.

How to start a GroupWatch on Disney+

First things first: anyone you want to watch Disney+ with must be signed into the streaming service and signed in on the device they’re using. You can sign up on the Disney+ website for £7.99/$7.99 per month or £79.90/$79.99 per year.

Once that’s done, here’s what you need to do:

  • On the Disney+ website or mobile app, select the movie/series you want to watch and click the group icon

Additionally, GroupWatch can only be initiated from the Disney+ website or mobile app. However, once you’re in the group, you can switch to a smart TV or a streaming device by clicking the group icon again for the series or movie you’re watching.

How to use SharePlay with Disney+

SharePlay is a feature available on iOS 15 that allows users to FaceTime each other and share videos, music and pictures live while video chatting alongside the content.

Up to 32 users can join a call at the same time and choose their preferred audio/subtitles based on their preferences.

You need an iPhone or iPad with iOS 15.1 (or iPadOS 15.1) and the latest version of the iOS Disney+ app.

Assuming you have this, here’s what you need to do to start a SharePlay call with Disney+.

  1. Tap the SharePlay icon in the FaceTime calling toolbar (the rightmost icon).
  2. Tap Share My Screen.
  3. Have the other person in the call tap Open on the Join Screen Sharing banner that appears in the call.
  4. Once screen sharing starts, your incoming notifications will disappear and the FaceTime toolbar will disappear as well. However, you can tap the purple icon in the top-right corner to restore FaceTime controls
  5. Open the Disney+ app and choose what you want to watch

Content can also be synced to watch on Apple TV in case users want a bigger screen to watch while on a call. The TV must be running tvOS 15.1 for Disney+ SharePlay to work.

How to use GroupWatch on Disney+ from abroad

If you’re based in a country that doesn’t offer GroupWatch, you can access it using a VPN.

VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) allow users to redirect their IP addresses, which means you can browse the web as if you are in a different country. There are numerous options on the market, but in our experience, NordVPN and ExpressVPN are the most trusted, reliable, and affordable VPNs.

To access Disney+ GroupWatch from abroad, simply follow the steps below:

  • Connect to a server in the UK, US, Canada, Australia or New Zealand using your VPN
  • Open Disney+ and sign in with your UK based account as usual
  • You can now access the different country version of Disney Plus – which includes the GroupWatch feature

How to chat with GroupWatch on Disney+

Unfortunately, Disney+ doesn’t offer an integrated chat service alongside GroupWatch. Viewers can respond to content on Disney+ with six different emojis, but that’s about it.

If you want to chat freely – or start an audio/video chat – you’ll need to use third-party software. There are several options to choose from – Discord, Google Meet, Messenger, WhatsApp or Skype. If you’re using a PC, you can do this by simply opening it in the browser and running it alongside the stream. On mobile devices, the app version should run smoothly alongside Disney+.

Host a watch party on Disney+ with Teleparty

If you want an integrated chatbox with your streaming friends, there’s another way to host a watch party on Disney+. Teleparty is a rebrand of Netflix Party, a third-party software for Chrome and Microsoft Edge users that allows viewers to watch TV series and movies together simultaneously while controlling playback and have a text chat window alongside.

If you want to start a teleparty on Disney+, you need to know the following basic instructions:

  • Go to netflixparty.com and select “Install Teleparty”
  • This will take you to your browser’s extensions page – select “Add to Chrome/Microsoft Edge”.
  • You will now see a red TP in your extensions list – pin the extension to your toolbar
  • Go to Disney+ and click on the extension
  • Start the party and choose to have sole control of playback controls
  • Copy the URL and send it to those who want to join the Watch Party. You should click on the link and select the red “TP” extension to log in
  • You should now see your friends in the Watch Party chat window

Teleparty is also available on Netflix, HBO Max, and Hulu — although GroupWatch users like Disney+ must all have accounts with the streaming service. Also, this extension is not available on mobile phones or tablets.
