How to watch Hulu outside the US
While Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video are the biggest well-known streaming names globally, Hulu is one of the top TV and movie streaming players in the US, offering content from a slew of film studios and TV networks. Outside of the US, Hulu is virtually non-existent.
That can be a major headache for some, though — if you’re an American Hulu subscriber trying to watch your content abroad, or someone who lives elsewhere but likes Hulu original shows like The Bold Type, Castle Rock, and Only Murders in the Building want to see when they are published, the geo-blocking of the service can make this almost impossible.
Almost impossible, but not quite. There is a way to watch Hulu abroad, whether you want to stream live TV or catch up on shows or movies, just like you can watch US Netflix, HBO, BBC iPlayer, or The Criterion Channel from anywhere in the world. Here’s how.
It should be noted that the international version of Hulu, Star, was a section that was added to Disney Plus on February 23, 2021. The majority of Hulu properties are coming to Disney+ internationally — though there can be a slight delay at times. You can sign up for Disney+ on the site for £7.99 a month or £79.99 a year.
Use a VPN
By far the easiest way to watch Hulu from abroad — and really the only way we recommend — is to use a VPN (virtual private network) service.
If you’re unfamiliar, a VPN allows you to browse the internet anonymously by assigning you a different IP address – one of the ways your internet usage can be tracked online. Read our full VPN explainer to learn more.
Many people use a VPN to hide their online activities from prying eyes, but they can also be used to trick websites into believing you’re accessing the internet from another country – the VPN will simply point you to one, for example US IP address to , and Hulu and other sites will think you’re there.
Of course, there’s a disclaimer: this is against Hulu’s Terms of Service because it violates the platform’s content licensing agreements. Proceed at your own risk.
Which is the best VPN for Hulu?
The good news is that most VPNs are a good choice for watching Hulu — all they have to do is offer a range of servers in the US, along with reasonable speeds and bandwidth allowances.
Our favorite choice is NordVPN, which at the time of writing has over three thousand servers available and very competitive prices. We’re also happy to recommend Surfshark – and you should check out our full ranking of the best streaming VPNs if you want to take a look at the rest of the competition.
Keep in mind that no matter what VPN you use, there’s a chance Hulu will detect you’re using a VPN and block you from using the service. In that case, try a few different servers on your VPN of choice — with a little luck, after a few tries, you’ll find one that works. Even if you don’t, try again another day and you might find a new available server to connect to and watch.
There are some free VPNs that work with Hulu, but they have limitations. There are often data or bandwidth caps – which you might hit pretty quickly when streaming video – and free VPNs often have slower speeds and limited server options, so you might suffer from lower video quality or even struggle to find a server to work with you can access Hulu.
Bear in mind that free VPNs can sometimes play a little fast and loose with your private browsing data, and we certainly recommend spending the few pounds or dollars a month that a paid VPN requires.
How to watch Hulu with a VPN
Once you’ve chosen a VPN, it’s easy to watch Hulu from the UK, Canada, or anywhere else. Just log into your VPN service and select a US server – most VPNs should let you choose your IP address location – then go to the Hulu website.
Keep in mind that you still need a Hulu account to watch anything, and Hulu itself isn’t free. Luckily, it’s not too expensive — you can pay either $6.99 a month with some ads, or $12.99 with no ads (and the added bonus of offline downloads on iOS), and either way, new subscribers can get their first month off received completely free of charge.
In addition, college students can also get a plan for $1.99 per month. To enroll, you must be at least 18 years old and have an active college enrollment.
If you also want to throw in live TV with 60+ channels, there’s a big jump up to $69.99 per month for ad-supported content and $75.99 per month for ad-free content.
If the ad-free subscription tempts you, you should also consider the new bundle, which includes ad-free Hulu, ESPN+, and the Disney Plus streaming service for just $13.99 a month — a total savings of $5 a month.
Unfortunately, there is another complication. Hulu sometimes blocks credit cards outside the US. So if you don’t already have an account and want to set one up, your attempts to sign in may be rejected.
If so, however, there is an easy workaround. Walmart sells Hulu gift cards for either $25 or $50 that you can use to create an account without a credit card. Walmart will simply email you the code, which you can then use to set up your account. You may also need a US address and phone number to sign up, but you can get them online for free.
Once you’ve signed up, you can access Hulu on many different devices, including your smart TV or gaming console — check out the full list of devices here — but make sure you take your specific VPN service’s advice on how to do it Setup for each device read your devices.
