Is Your Version of Internet Explorer Safe from Vulnerabilities?

Is Your Version of Internet Explorer Safe from Vulnerabilities - Is Your Version of Internet Explorer Safe from Vulnerabilities?

Microsoft announced in last week’s Patch Tuesday update that it fixes up to 60 vulnerabilities, including two dangerous zero-day vulnerabilities. One that exists in Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 9, 10, and 11 could reportedly “corrupt memory in a way that would allow an attacker to run arbitrary code” while masquerading as an authorized user.

A zero-day vulnerability is defined as a vulnerability in software, unknown to the vendor, that is exploited by hackers before the vendor notices and rushes to fix it. This particular one works in a targeted manner and lures an Internet Explorer user to an illegal website that looks like a trustworthy source. Once there, the cyber attackers can exploit other compromised links or “malvertisements” to exploit the vulnerability in Internet Explorer’s security.

Similar problems with the software that powers key applications like Internet Explorer have historically led to large-scale ransomware infections, costing businesses and individuals thousands of dollars and compromising the security of their data.

Another zero-day vulnerability fixed by last week’s Patch Tuesday security update is a Windows shell remote code execution that exists when Windows “does not properly validate file paths”. Similar to the bug in Internet Explorer, this vulnerability could allow successful hackers to run arbitrary code while masquerading as an authorized user. To exploit this vulnerability, a user would have to click on a malicious file delivered via a phishing email or other spam attack.
